Collecting Voices

this is us is a collection of nine original poetry pieces and written reflections by racialized second-generation immigrant youth and young adults, ages 15 to 30, from across Ontario. Through powerful personal narratives, the collection explores themes of identity, belonging, culture, family, resilience, joy, healing, discrimination, community, self-discovery, and more.

Published in 2026, this is us was created to provide a platform for second-generation racialized youth to share their experiences in their own words. The collection recognizes that many young people navigate complex intersections of culture, migration, race, and identity, often without spaces where these experiences are fully acknowledged or understood. By bringing together diverse voices and stories, the book seeks to foster connection, reduce feelings of isolation, and create opportunities for collective reflection and dialogue.

More than a collection of poetry, this is us is a celebration of the strength, creativity, and lived experiences of second-generation racialized youth. The project aims to empower contributors by amplifying their voices while also offering readers an opportunity to see themselves reflected in the stories of others. Through storytelling and creative expression, the collection builds community, promotes understanding, and highlights the importance of creating spaces where racialized youth can feel seen, heard, and valued.

The second book in the series will be more expansive in its contributors, including racialized second-generation immigrants from across Canada and across all age groups. It will also broaden its creative scope to include visual art forms alongside written work, creating a blended form of expression and storytelling.
